What is Trans-Urethral Laser Vaporization of Prostate?
Trans-Urethral Laser Vaporization of Prostate using the greenlight laser, is a minimally invasive method of treating enlarged prostate. It uses laser energy to vaporize the prostatic tissue which causes obstruction for the patient. It can be done as an outpatient procedure from the hospital or the patients may stay overnight and be discharged the next day. Dr. Kamyar Ebrahimi who is a fellowship trained urologist in endourology and has expertise in using this laser technology, and has taught other physicians on this technique, advises his patients to have the catheter overnight and remove it the day after the procedure. Dr. Ebrahimi believes that the swelling caused by the procedure may cause urinary retention (inability to urinate) for some patients, but waiting overnight could avoid this painful problem.
